The Alternative of Williams-Burg
Drawn by: Philip Dawe
Date of Publication: February 16, 1775
If the high class British men don´t sign the document then they will be tarred and feathered.
The people in the back are holding weapons.
The people holding weapons are intimidating the British men into signing a document.
This child is holding a flag that says liberty.
Historical Context
Philip Dawe drew this image in order to inform the British high class that the poor are forcing them to sign a document which enforces liberty in Britain. The audiences are both the British and the Americans since it wants to tell them both what goes on on the streets of Britain.
Contemporary Image
What it means to be an American
This image's purpose it to tell the audience that what it means to be an American is to be someone that can make a change even if it is a small one. This image is similar to "The Alternative of Williams-burg" because it shows the struggle of the poor in today's society. I think that the society back then and the society now hasn't changed a lot and many people are still at a shortage of money.
